How Often Should You Use Beard Oil? The Rule Every Beardsman Should Know

The Minimum Rule: Apply After Every Shower

The minimum baseline for using Beard Oil is simple: apply it after every shower. Beard oil is one of the two most critical products in any beard care routine, along with beard wash. Consistent application is what separates a healthy, nourished beard from one that is dry, itchy, and irritated.

While applying beard oil after every shower is the minimum, we recommend using it twice a day. More on that in a moment.

Why Beard Oil Is Non-Negotiable

Your facial skin and beard hair constantly lose moisture, especially in dry climates and during colder months. The skin on your scalp produces approximately five times more sebum oil for your head hair than the skin beneath your beard produces for your facial hair. This leaves your beard more vulnerable to becoming dry, itchy and or flaky.

Beard oil helps replenish the natural oils lost throughout the day and stripped away during showering. It helps eliminate beard itch, prevent beardruff, and keep the skin underneath your beard healthy and hydrated.

The application rule is straightforward: after your shower, while your beard is still slightly damp, warm approximately three drops of beard oil per inch of beard length between your palms. Work the oil into the skin beneath your beard first, then distribute it throughout the beard hair.

The Gold Standard for Beard Oil Use

The ideal frequency depends on your routine, skin type, climate, and beard. However, for most guys, we recommend applying beard oil twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. We consider this the gold standard for beard oil use.

Here is how to approach it based on your shower routine:

If You Shower in the Morning

Apply beard oil after your morning shower while your beard is still slightly damp. At night, lightly dampen your beard with water, then apply beard oil again.

If You Shower at Night

Apply beard oil after your nighttime shower while your beard is still slightly damp. In the morning, lightly dampen your beard and apply oil again before heading out for the day.

Starting your day without beard oil after your beard has gone through a full night is not recommended. Your beard and the skin underneath need that morning hydration before being exposed to the environment throughout the day.

Please Note: For the most effective beard care routine, we also recommend applying Beard Butter approximately 5–10 minutes after your Beard Oil and following a consistent daily beard-washing routine.

Can You Apply Beard Oil to a Dry Beard?

Yes, you can apply beard oil to a completely dry beard, and it will still provide benefits. However, we recommend applying it while your beard is slightly damp whenever possible.

Beard oil helps retain moisture, so applying it to a slightly damp beard allows you to take advantage of the hydration provided by the water. The oil helps reduce moisture loss while nourishing and conditioning the beard hair and the skin underneath. This combination generally leaves your beard feeling softer, smoother, and better hydrated.

Your beard should be slightly damp, not soaking wet. If applying beard oil to a dry beard is your only option, that is totally fine and it will still work very well.

The Personalization Factor

Some guys with naturally less-dry skin or those living in more humid climates may find that applying beard oil once a day works well for them. This is something you will need to dial in based on your own experience, including how your beard feels and how the skin underneath responds.

However, applying beard oil twice a day is our general recommendation and what we find works best for most beardsmen.

Summary

At a minimum, apply beard oil after every shower. For most guys, applying it twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, is ideal. Lightly dampen your beard before each application, use approximately three drops per inch of beard length as a starting point, and work the oil into the skin first before distributing it throughout your beard.

Consistency is what builds the foundation for a healthy, hydrated, and great-looking beard.
